Background


Kjarnaskogur is an good example of an Icelandic peri-urban forest recreational area where close collaboration has been with the municipality and the local forest society.  This forests was initially planned for recreation from the early establishment on barren, exposed land.  The area was initiated, established and is still managed by Eyjafjordur Forest Society, being the oldest society in the portfolio of Icelandic Forestry Association, founded in 1930.  The collaboration between the forest society and the municipality has been the key to the success of the Kjarnaskogur area.

Description:
Kjarnaskogur (and associated areas) is around 1000 ha in the periphery of Akureyri town, having 15.000 inhabitants. The forest area is popular the year around, receiving around 150.000 annual visitors.  The visitors are mix of local people and tourists   The facilities in the area include network of footpaths, playgrounds, picnic areas and cross country skiing during winter time.  The area is bordering the town, being easily accessible to users.
