Sabor Ecopista, Northeast Portugal

Year established: 2006.

Ownership: Municipality

Background

The Sabor Ecopista is a best example of rehabilitation of an abandoned railway. What makes this a good example is the use of an exceptional access (gentle slope and corrected floor) to enjoy a valuable natural forest site. The “Ecopista” was established over an former railway abandoned in the eighties and rehabilitated in 2006. It was an initiative of the municipality of Torre de Moncorvo. It’s a new structure with a growing utilization by the local population and by visitors. Currently it includes 8 kilometres from a total of 22 kilometres planned.

Description

This is a former railway built to transport iron ore mined in Reboredo during the first quarter of the 20th century. Later, this railway became an important transport means of people and merchandises between the Planalto Mirandês and the coast of Portugal. In the1980’s, train circulation was interrupted and the railway is today a valid rambling path. The Sabor valley presents remnants of ancient Mediterranean forests, shelters rare varieties of wild grapes and olive trees as well as endangered birds (Natura 2000 site PTCON00020). This project includes the regularization of the ground, installation of wooded fences, signalization, and sanitary facilities. In a near future, picnic sites, bars and support for cycling and horseback riding will conclude the final infra-structure. Environmental and landscape panels will be included in order to improve the site.

What to avoid

So far only a few activities to motivate local population to de project , namely two “paddy-papers”, were developed. Projects of this nature need an effective public involvement to stimulate pedestrianism, new healthy attitudes, and knowledge about natural and cultural values.
